Sword Art Online has turned out to be one of my favorite shows from the Summer season line-up. Yes, it definitely falls into some tropes and cliché’s but I have been able to look passed those because of all the things it does right. The animation is some of the best out of the year without a doubt and the background work is about as good as Eden of the East.
They have a very original take on an MMO, one that is a lot more relatable and down to earth than that of .Hack//Sign and I love the subtle terminology from real world MMO slang. I’ve never been much of an MMO gamer myself, however, I have a friend watching each week with me who has played WoW since launch very competitively (being ones of the top 3 on his server) and he really appreciates the direction and perspective they show on the the whole culture of the genre.
Additionally, I really like how at least until Episode 5, all of the episodes kind of fit into little short stories, character pieces if you will, and I’d imagine that comes from it being a novel originally.
Check out SAO, it may falter in some places, but it has immense charm!
